The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Barnhill

On the yearly day of sacrifice, a child is selected by the council of elders, and taken to a sacred spot - an offering to the evil witch who will destroy them if they do not obey. 

Only there is no evil witch, the council have created her to keep the townsfolk in fear, and to keep themselves in power.

There is, however, a good witch, who is baffled to find a child abandoned in the forest each year. This kind, elderly woman, visits the sacred spot, collects the babies that appear, and takes them to another town where they will be loved and cared for.

That is, until she found baby Luna, who she accidentally fed moonlight instead of starlight - the error making Luna too magical and powerful to be raised by humans.

This beautifully written fairytale follows Luna and her new family, consisting of a witch, a swamp  monster and a dragon, on a journey of magical discovery, told through alternating viewpoints.

I loved everything about this book, from the intricate storyline, to the stunning use of the English language.
